Jacko: Ticket Or Refund?

Posted Tue 30 Jun 2009 11:47AM BST by Dave Rumour in Snap, Crackle and Pop
As millions continue to mourn the death of Michael Jackson across the globe, many fans who bought tickets for the pop superstar's ill-fated "This Is It" dates have also been wondering when or if they will get their money back. Around 800,000 reportedly paid considerable sums to see his much-anticipated but unlikely comeback, which was scheduled to stretch across 50 dates at London's O2 Arena. Today news emerged that the promoters have come up with a novel idea to commemorate his passing.

All fans will be eligible to a refund or can instead sacrifice the money to receive their exclusive ticket, which features a holographic, 3D image of Jackson in one of his iconic, dancing poses. Eight different versions are understood to have been printed and AEG Live say they have been inundated with requests from fans who are eager to keep what are sure to become collector's items and a highly-sought after piece of music memorabilia.

Company president Randy Phillips explained they were keen to make sure people were treated fairly after missing out on the chance to see Michael. "The world lost a kind soul who just happened to be the greatest entertainer the world has ever known", he explained. "Since he loved his fans in life, it is incumbent upon us to treat them with the same reverence and respect after his death." For more information on the refund policy and to view what are said to be the final live shots of Jackson, taken just two days before his death, view the video clip below:

What do you think of AEG's plan? Is it a cheap gimmick or a fitting tribute to Jackson? Will you be seeking a refund or a commemorative ticket? Have your say here...

this is one way of getting out of giving everyone a refund. But just think of how rare these promotional tickets will be and how much they will be worth.

I agree with the last post. The fans should get the refund and the ticket. I think it is disgusting that the company should keep all the money and offer fans a piece of paper, these people were true fans, those who liked his music "before" he passed away. Give them the tickets and the refund, or offer them the tickets and a 75 % refund , not either or.

43. NORMAN -
What a con. You would have got the ticket anyway and then you would have seen the show do thay tink we are all MUGS

Are the promoters taking the piss? Seriously? My tickets were £75 each so £150 for two bits of card with a bit of shiny on them...I know what option, I'll be taking.

If you had a £75 ticket, do you get a ticket and a £25 refund because the people who had the £50 tickets are going to be getting exactly the same ticket...WHAT A JOKE.

Cheap crass profiteering

@pennylilac - I think it would be kind of difficult for them to present a MJ concert at this point, don't you? It's just an offer. If people want the money back they can get it. The problem will be that many people brought tickets from scalpers and will only be able to get the face value back from the ticket and not the extra cash they were charged by the scalper. That's why some may just take what will be a collectors item that years from now they may end up getting more money from.

it's clearly a rip off but I'm sure lots of people will go for it. It's a shocking way for AEG to keep the money with none of the expense of putting on a show. Basically people will be robbed but they'll agree to it. Mugs!

These tickets value will be dependent on demand. The more tickets requested will lower the value to a collector.

49. Deirdre -
Definitely - fans should be given ticket and refund - anything else would be vulgar money making scam on the part of the promoters. I think MJ would like his fans to have some memento at this sad time!

If everyone does this then they are not going to be rare and collectable any more. If 10,000 people from each date claims a ticket then thats 50 x 10,000 tickets!!! 500,000 rare, collectable tickets!! I think not, they wont be worth the price thay were paid for. And then what happens to all the tickets that are not claimed by the holders?? They will magically appear on ebay sold by 'Alex Edward Gregory'.

Im not Cynical!

I think they should keep the money and spend it on building a Michael Jackson Museum. Those people who bought the tickets will then get a free pass!!!
It'l be a tribute to Michael and everyone's a winner!

Sounds like a way of making money, tickets are printed, so fans should get a refund, and the ticket, its not out fault he died.

56. saadia -
michael will never come back and there will never be another michael to represent him, so why not just refund the funs because that is it michael is not there and will never be there again.

I paid £350 for 2 tickets on Viagogo, am hopefully going to get a full refund as that amount for a couple of tickets seems a bit much. I just hope that the person who was supposed to sell me their tickets via Viagogo doesn't opt for the ticket souvenier option!
