Jacko: Ticket Or Refund?

Posted Tue 30 Jun 2009 11:47AM BST by Dave Rumour in Snap, Crackle and Pop
As millions continue to mourn the death of Michael Jackson across the globe, many fans who bought tickets for the pop superstar's ill-fated "This Is It" dates have also been wondering when or if they will get their money back. Around 800,000 reportedly paid considerable sums to see his much-anticipated but unlikely comeback, which was scheduled to stretch across 50 dates at London's O2 Arena. Today news emerged that the promoters have come up with a novel idea to commemorate his passing.

All fans will be eligible to a refund or can instead sacrifice the money to receive their exclusive ticket, which features a holographic, 3D image of Jackson in one of his iconic, dancing poses. Eight different versions are understood to have been printed and AEG Live say they have been inundated with requests from fans who are eager to keep what are sure to become collector's items and a highly-sought after piece of music memorabilia.

Company president Randy Phillips explained they were keen to make sure people were treated fairly after missing out on the chance to see Michael. "The world lost a kind soul who just happened to be the greatest entertainer the world has ever known", he explained. "Since he loved his fans in life, it is incumbent upon us to treat them with the same reverence and respect after his death." For more information on the refund policy and to view what are said to be the final live shots of Jackson, taken just two days before his death, view the video clip below:

What do you think of AEG's plan? Is it a cheap gimmick or a fitting tribute to Jackson? Will you be seeking a refund or a commemorative ticket? Have your say here...

I agree, everone should receive a refund & their ticket. Surely it's the property of the person that's bought it anyway???

They won't lose anything! This was one of the most insured gigs in History, they probably stand to make even more money with him dead than if he actually performed.

I would keep the ticket for remembrance of being a true fan to Michael Jackson.
But one thing that the organizer could also do is to get bunch of top artists to perform some sort of tribute concerts for Michael Jackson where the fans who have bought the tickets could still enjoy their favourite Michael Jackson's songs.
The money earned during the concerts will go to the trust funds of Michael Jackson's children.

Agree with the above.

Fans should be offered a refund and given the tickets to keep as a memento. This would be the most respectful option and it's probably what he would have wanted.

Organisers keeping the money for a concert that will never happen is in bad taste. Often there are insurances in place against things like this and the companies are likely to be well covered.

Crap, I paid to see the show not the souvenir. I know where to buy Michael’s souvenir when I need one, so thank you, but its pay back time.

AEG Live are rumored to lose £300 million through this tragic event, it is there way of keeping loss to a minimum, our tickets will already be printed and awaiting delivery, people should get the choise to donate a percentage for their ticket not the full amount as we are not going to beable to see the KING OF POP.
Rest In Peace Michael

Scam, Scam Scam....... They are just trying to get out of having to pay the money. If the tickets are already printed they should give them to the fans or if they had charge a small fee.

Sure the ticket looks very nice and would be nice to have. BUT I think the powers that be should bite the bullett and send the tickets out along with a full refund. They are trying to claw back just a fraction of the loss caused by his passing. the truth seems to be that the fans would not have seen much of Micheal anyway as his health was so bad. And from what I have heard it was unlikely that he could have given 1 performance let alone 50. May he rest in peace and find happiness in the after life. Sadly In life he was used, abused and miss understood.

I think if they really want to treat his fans with love and respect that he showed them they should given them a refund and let them have the ticket at printing cost which would be pennies

If he'd died after the tickets had been distributed, they'd have gotten both the ticket and a cash refund, so it's only timing that's letting them put it this way to try to keep the money by making fans feel guilt or a sense of not wanting to let go of a last remaining piece of their idol. It's a bit unfair and really they should be sending out the tickets aswell as offering refunds as has been said.
But then how much of the money is actually going to Jackson's estate to pay his debts and prevent loss of all his belongings and care for his children? In that sense, well...

a ticket without a show is not value for money in my opinion

"AEG Live say they have been inundated with requests from fans who are eager to keep what are sure to become collector's items.." ..really? fans are ASKING to keep something they own? What if AEG so no, are they going to come round and ask for thi ticket back? That man is telling big fat fishy whoppers..

93. David G -
Its just a way to keep our money how much does the ticket cost to produce 2p ? I suppose there are a lot of mugs out there but im not not gonna be one of them.

94. Gary -
I would like to keep a ticket or 2 yes, but I want to know where the money is going to? I would not like O2 to get all the money for the sake of printing a few tickets off and making a fortune.

I would hope that the money goes to a charity or to the jackson family

95. Jo -
Ah i hadnt thought about what the company had spent out, well maybe send the ticket and part refund then

96. Yahoo! Music User -
they should get the full refund and a ticket as a memento after all they've already been printed. i certainly wouldnt surrender £75 for piece of paper. I agree AEG are just trying to keep hold of extra money. AEG will have surely had Michael insured in the event the concerts couldn't go ahead as is the norm. So it seems to me that they are trying to double their money.

97. Preston -
hahahaha. thats a good 1.
all this talk of 800 000 tickets becomng memoribilias and being worth more is bull.
it's all a scam there are just too many of them to around to for that.
it's a simple con to stop people from getting their refun coz the co wants yo money,
question? y dont they but back the tickets and make that money themselves if their going to be vaulable:s?????
ryt now they are not worth the paper they are printed on and it will stay that way.

98. Yahoo! Music User -
con mark 1

99. Neil -
OK here's a novel idea - why not, instead of making a baco-foil piece of crap for financial gain, the promoters maybe thought folk may wish to instead donate to XXX charity, be it the American/British Heart Foundation, Child charities etc etc.

Im plenty sure folk would go for that - AND as a thank you, STILL give the bits of holographic paper to those who said "donate" - so for all the folk who want a bit of paper, fair enough its your cash, but why not get refund and donate? Jacko funded a lot of charitable trusts by the sounds of it, so one would think this would have been preferable...

Ah well - each to their own...

Everyone should claim the refund. Break the b*******s who helped to kill him. Remember Michael thought he had only signed to do 10 concerts. 50 was way too much for him to cope with. The promoters just used him as money-making machine. How can they seriously claim these tickets will become valuable when there are 800,000 of them. Demand a refund now!
