However, John Lennon always insisted it was inspired by Lucy Vodden. She was a fellow pupil of his son Julian's in 1966, when he returned from nursery one day with a picture showing a girl with diamond-shaped eyes. This week, it was confirmed that Lucy had died of the immune system disease Lupus, aged just 46. She and Lennon had reportedly resumed their friendship in recent years, after he learnt of the illness, and he and mother Cynthia are said to be "shocked and saddened" by her passing.
St Thomas Lupus Trust have paid tribute to Lucy, campaign director Angie Davidson commenting: "She was a great supporter of ours and a real fighter. It's so sad that she has finally lost the battle she fought so bravely for so long." Snap, Crackle and Pop would also like to honour her memory even if the lyrics to "Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds" - "Follow her down to a bridge by a fountain / Where rocking horse people eat marshmallow pies / Everyone smiles as you drift past the flowers / That grow so incredibly high" - and this clip from "Yellow Submarine" suggest there's rather more to this landmark in pop culture than a little drawing...
