Mamma Mia! New ABBA!

Posted Fri 8 May 2009 11:21AM BST by Dave Rumour in Snap, Crackle and Pop
Back in January, an online ticket company carried out a poll to find which band pop fans would most like to see make a comeback. The clear winners were ABBA, who have not been seen on the same stage for over 30 years and will surely never perform together again. However, news reaches Snap, Crackle and Pop today of something that might come as a consolation to their millions of fans. Legendary songwriting duo Benny Andersson and Bjorn Ulvaeus have penned their first music together in 15 years.

Their new collaborations are to feature on an upcoming collection from The Benny Andersson Band, who have been a huge live draw in the pair's native Sweden for some time. It marks the pair's first collaboration since writing for Josefin Nilsson in the early 1990s. "We haven't done any pop songs for a long time", Benny explained, with the project lead by "Second Best To None", recorded with employees from his Stockholm-based Hotel Rival, which can be seen below.

"I realised that at least 20 of them were singing in amateur choirs in Stockholm", said Andersson, continuing: "I asked them, do you want me to write a song for you and we can put it on our homepage? They said yes so that's what I did. And I asked Bjorn if he would like to write the lyrics, and we recorded it with the staff. We released it as a single as well. It's just a lot of fun and it's taking care of the staff at the hotel more than anything else." The group are set to play their first English concert in London in July. Just don't expect an ABBA reunion.

What do you think of "Second Best To None"? Does it sound like ABBA or just a cheesy, over-the-hill imitation?! Have your say here...

Might have sounded better with just one womans voice.... sounds like a bad Abba one... the one that didnt make the album....

62. John -
Quite a catch tune, but must be the worst pop video ever!

Doesn't have the round deep sound of a true ABBA song. Misses the voices of the girls, could unfortunately be any new eurovisionesque type sound. not the real ABBA sound.

64. Mark -
this is nothing like ABBA but the song is ok i gusse but benney and bjorn have lost the ABBA feel that that is what makes ABBA THE BEST!!!!

65. Yahoo! Music User -
sounds more like crabba if any one said it sounds like abba then they have no idea who abba is it sounds crap

66. Constance -
Sorry, just an ABBA ripoff. Not nearly as fresh and original as the originals!

67. Side -
Works as a jingle, but that's all. It's too unspired and bland to be compared to an Abba song.
What I'm really looking forward to is the concert by The Benny Andersson Band in London on July 4. They do some really good stuff and put on a great show.

Nothing special at all after a 15 year break. Style's similar, but that chorus is just not ABBA. There's little variation in the orchestral or solo instrument areas.
Very disappointing.

73. Peter -
Love it should get to number 1
