Mamma Mia! New ABBA!

Posted Fri 8 May 2009 11:21AM BST by Dave Rumour in Snap, Crackle and Pop
Back in January, an online ticket company carried out a poll to find which band pop fans would most like to see make a comeback. The clear winners were ABBA, who have not been seen on the same stage for over 30 years and will surely never perform together again. However, news reaches Snap, Crackle and Pop today of something that might come as a consolation to their millions of fans. Legendary songwriting duo Benny Andersson and Bjorn Ulvaeus have penned their first music together in 15 years.

Their new collaborations are to feature on an upcoming collection from The Benny Andersson Band, who have been a huge live draw in the pair's native Sweden for some time. It marks the pair's first collaboration since writing for Josefin Nilsson in the early 1990s. "We haven't done any pop songs for a long time", Benny explained, with the project lead by "Second Best To None", recorded with employees from his Stockholm-based Hotel Rival, which can be seen below.

"I realised that at least 20 of them were singing in amateur choirs in Stockholm", said Andersson, continuing: "I asked them, do you want me to write a song for you and we can put it on our homepage? They said yes so that's what I did. And I asked Bjorn if he would like to write the lyrics, and we recorded it with the staff. We released it as a single as well. It's just a lot of fun and it's taking care of the staff at the hotel more than anything else." The group are set to play their first English concert in London in July. Just don't expect an ABBA reunion.

What do you think of "Second Best To None"? Does it sound like ABBA or just a cheesy, over-the-hill imitation?! Have your say here...

I'm sorry - have been an ABBA fan since childhood - please do not do this.....

Nobody can replace ABBA in anyway.......The song itself would have sounded better if A singer had performed it, not a full choir.

Sorry guys NOT MY CUP OF TEA...:o(

It is a refreshing change to hear something different as today's music leaves a lot to be desired. I found it a little cheesy but it has all the feeling of ABBA but not the look. I found the video slightly off putting with all the smiles as it appeared to be more like an advert for Colgate toothpaste. The singers should have spent more time relaxing and just being themselves than staring into the camera like some silly art student. It would be interesting to see this piece of music played to a different video without the silly acting and silly smiles.
Perhaps we would be more impressed with that. Still I will give it 5 out of 10 for effort. Good luck to them.

It isn't meant to be ABBA who were truly the greatest. However, ignore the fact that it is written by the same songwriters and I think it will be a hit. Time will tell. I enjoyed it.

Well it's written by the Abba guys, but the artist isn't ABBA, its just some band. They aren't calling themselves Abba anyway, so I don't know why some writers here are takig such offence at this tune & saying 'how dare they put this out as ABBA' because clearly, they are not.
And yeah it sucks. Haha.

99. Mark -
Sounds like someone pretending to be Abba............BADLY

It's a cheesy mickey take I think. No one will replace ABBA.
