Mamma Mia! New ABBA!

Posted Fri 8 May 2009 11:21AM BST by Dave Rumour in Snap, Crackle and Pop
Back in January, an online ticket company carried out a poll to find which band pop fans would most like to see make a comeback. The clear winners were ABBA, who have not been seen on the same stage for over 30 years and will surely never perform together again. However, news reaches Snap, Crackle and Pop today of something that might come as a consolation to their millions of fans. Legendary songwriting duo Benny Andersson and Bjorn Ulvaeus have penned their first music together in 15 years.

Their new collaborations are to feature on an upcoming collection from The Benny Andersson Band, who have been a huge live draw in the pair's native Sweden for some time. It marks the pair's first collaboration since writing for Josefin Nilsson in the early 1990s. "We haven't done any pop songs for a long time", Benny explained, with the project lead by "Second Best To None", recorded with employees from his Stockholm-based Hotel Rival, which can be seen below.

"I realised that at least 20 of them were singing in amateur choirs in Stockholm", said Andersson, continuing: "I asked them, do you want me to write a song for you and we can put it on our homepage? They said yes so that's what I did. And I asked Bjorn if he would like to write the lyrics, and we recorded it with the staff. We released it as a single as well. It's just a lot of fun and it's taking care of the staff at the hotel more than anything else." The group are set to play their first English concert in London in July. Just don't expect an ABBA reunion.

What do you think of "Second Best To None"? Does it sound like ABBA or just a cheesy, over-the-hill imitation?! Have your say here...

Mamma Mia it's horrendous! Words tacky and shallow, music and arrangement so dated, singing ..... well they just cannot sing the poor sods! Benny & Bjorn, you should put brown paper bags over your heads!!!! ABBA FOREVER!

A Lot like the orignal ABBA More like this one please.

106. Rebecca -
sound nothing like ABBA and never will. it needs the two girls back to make the band. fanes says they want ABBA back but they mean the really deal. ABBA will never be the same without all the originals back together. so who wants the originals back?

So no new 'ABBA' song really at all then. Oh well.

The song has that abba sound from their very earliest songs. However, the ensemble singing just isn't cutting it, as it was the distinctive and beautiful voices and harmonies of the girls that really brought out the best in their songs.

sounds a bit like abba in places could grow on people but not with the ones singing ,abba are in the past but not forgotton. sounds like it came from the seventies of eighties .

Happy clappy - dated, derivative, but not distinctive. Might be useful for the sound track to a sequel to Mama Mia! the movie...
