Mamma Mia! New ABBA!

Posted Fri 8 May 2009 11:21AM BST by Dave Rumour in Snap, Crackle and Pop
Back in January, an online ticket company carried out a poll to find which band pop fans would most like to see make a comeback. The clear winners were ABBA, who have not been seen on the same stage for over 30 years and will surely never perform together again. However, news reaches Snap, Crackle and Pop today of something that might come as a consolation to their millions of fans. Legendary songwriting duo Benny Andersson and Bjorn Ulvaeus have penned their first music together in 15 years.

Their new collaborations are to feature on an upcoming collection from The Benny Andersson Band, who have been a huge live draw in the pair's native Sweden for some time. It marks the pair's first collaboration since writing for Josefin Nilsson in the early 1990s. "We haven't done any pop songs for a long time", Benny explained, with the project lead by "Second Best To None", recorded with employees from his Stockholm-based Hotel Rival, which can be seen below.

"I realised that at least 20 of them were singing in amateur choirs in Stockholm", said Andersson, continuing: "I asked them, do you want me to write a song for you and we can put it on our homepage? They said yes so that's what I did. And I asked Bjorn if he would like to write the lyrics, and we recorded it with the staff. We released it as a single as well. It's just a lot of fun and it's taking care of the staff at the hotel more than anything else." The group are set to play their first English concert in London in July. Just don't expect an ABBA reunion.

What do you think of "Second Best To None"? Does it sound like ABBA or just a cheesy, over-the-hill imitation?! Have your say here...

typical sounding Eurovision song. In other words, cheesy but catchy tune.

It sounds like Abba on a bad day.

Some elements sound a bit like Abba... But that was absolutely AWFUL D: *goes off to listen to Waterloo*

124. Anthony J -
sounds nothing like abba , bring back the the originals

125. Alf -
Give the song to Bjorn Again to sing it and I'm sure it would be a hit...But with these tuneless wannabes singing it I'm afraid it sounds utter rubbish!

Benny and Bjorn should stick to writing musicals, leave the pop to the young folk so they dont tarnish their legendery status, they were genius in the 70s but times have changed, i felt myself cringe all the way through that.

I think this is second best to ALL! They haven't reall tried here have they?

i love abba but no way its no good

A pleasant song to listen too, but no prizes for coming second!!

There is only one Abba which consists of Anni-Frid, Agnetha, Benny and Bjorn. This sounds like an Abba song that is sung by a school choir, it does not work or sound anything like it should if Abba sang it. Too many people singing the song absolutely ruin it. A potential classic ruined.

oh dear sounds like school children singing in the play ground

IT IS LACKING THOSE TWO GIRLS WHO MADE ABBA IN THE FIRST PLACE !!! WITHOUT THEM THERE IS NO ABBA...
