Mamma Mia! New ABBA!

Posted Fri 8 May 2009 11:21AM BST by Dave Rumour in Snap, Crackle and Pop
Back in January, an online ticket company carried out a poll to find which band pop fans would most like to see make a comeback. The clear winners were ABBA, who have not been seen on the same stage for over 30 years and will surely never perform together again. However, news reaches Snap, Crackle and Pop today of something that might come as a consolation to their millions of fans. Legendary songwriting duo Benny Andersson and Bjorn Ulvaeus have penned their first music together in 15 years.

Their new collaborations are to feature on an upcoming collection from The Benny Andersson Band, who have been a huge live draw in the pair's native Sweden for some time. It marks the pair's first collaboration since writing for Josefin Nilsson in the early 1990s. "We haven't done any pop songs for a long time", Benny explained, with the project lead by "Second Best To None", recorded with employees from his Stockholm-based Hotel Rival, which can be seen below.

"I realised that at least 20 of them were singing in amateur choirs in Stockholm", said Andersson, continuing: "I asked them, do you want me to write a song for you and we can put it on our homepage? They said yes so that's what I did. And I asked Bjorn if he would like to write the lyrics, and we recorded it with the staff. We released it as a single as well. It's just a lot of fun and it's taking care of the staff at the hotel more than anything else." The group are set to play their first English concert in London in July. Just don't expect an ABBA reunion.

What do you think of "Second Best To None"? Does it sound like ABBA or just a cheesy, over-the-hill imitation?! Have your say here...

Definitely ABBA !!! Perhaps an imitation but definitely NOT cheesy ! Pity the girls aren't there, but if my eyes don't deceive me, there are suitable replacements among the hotel staff !!! (depending on their voices !!!) .

Got the trademarks of the old ABBA songwriting but not the voices. Reply to one comment above -Who said they were trying to "put this off as ABBA" ?

It sounds like ABBA, but they have to start singing songs which are a bit more modern. This is the kind of song you would have heard 20 years ago.

Yup. Deffinatly heavy echoes of Abba. But then what is anyone to expect when the two main writers of all the Abba songs teamed up again to write this one. But admittedly, it's not near as good as the hits that Abba originally wrote and recorded.

I wished thay had have stayed brilliant in the 70's! This smacks of Eurovision im afraid! Bit predictable and sounds a bit like something that was thrown together in someones back bedroom - Awful!
