Manic Street Preachers Banned

Posted Fri 15 May 2009 11:34AM BST by Dave Rumour in Snap, Crackle and Pop
You probably wouldn't know it looking at their rather tired 21st century image but the Manic Street Preachers used to be a quite terrifying prospect for some, full of provoctive teen rage, playing "Top Of The Pops" in balaclavas, while tragic lost member Richey Edwards famously slashed the words "For Real" into his bloody arm in a bid to impress former music journalist Steve Lamacq. They might be a lot older now but that's not stopped their new album being banned by four of the UK's big retail giants, with one supermarket calling the artwork "inappropriate".

The cover for "Journal For Plague Lovers" (pictured) depicts a girl seemingly with a bloody and battered face and has been painted by acclaimed artist Jenny Saville. The record is considered a follow-up to the Welsh rockers' landmark 1994 album "The Holy Bible", which also featured one of her controversial works. Sainsburys, Tesco, Asda and Morrisons have all refused to stock it with the original image, as Nicola Williamson, music buyer for Sainsbury's explained: "We felt that some customers might consider this particular album cover to be inappropriate if it were prominently displayed on the shelf. "

The Manics have reacted with bafflement at the news, calling their decision "truly bizarre" and pointing to the fact that such shops regularly display products of a similarly graphic nature. "We just thought it was a beautiful painting. We were all in total agreement", explained singer James Dean Bradfield, continuing: "You can have lovely shiny buttocks and guns everywhere in the supermarket on covers of magazines and CDs, but you show a piece of art and people just freak out". "Journal For Plague Lovers" is released on Monday but will only be available in these stores in a special sleeve provided by the publisher.

Are you shocked by the artwork to the new Manic Street Preachers album? Or do you think Sainsburys and co have gone too far in banning it? Have your say here...

That cover is pretty shocking :S

2. Richard -
Thought provoking work often is shocking. Was anyone hurt to produce this art? Is it going to cause those who have suffered abuse to have an adverse reaction? Do we stop showing anything bad that happens in life?

3. Jayne -
No - the world has gone mad!

4. Darren -
It's great for publicity & that's all that matters.

5. Rachel P -
It's a painting by Jenny Saville... That is the style of her work... Where is the shock?

6. Sam -
I like it, it is thought provokeing. I dont see why someone would feel it inappropriate.

7. David -
I'd rather they banned the bland and insipid rubbish that gets sold day after day and rots the brains of people but, hey ho, art is meant to provoke and it will continue to do so.

9. Fahad -

10. One Durkstar -
i think it is great!

I quite agree with James from the Manics - its a piece of art; most of the so-called images on magazines and other publications are not art and are there just for titilation. Art is an expression and it should be put in the public eye just as much as the 'artwork' and I use that term lightly, from other publications.
I would rather see this than women baring all on the front of a magazine or someone lying dead from a bloody shooting on a front cover of a newspaper, but these images are shown frequently.
The supermarkets have to get off their politically correct high horses and get real!

12. Yahoo! Music User -
the cover is not as shocking as the dirge within

13. Benjamin -
How absurd. You look at tesco magazine shelves and it is a sea of boobs, bums, provocative wording and a host of 'lads' lags which are low down so any kid can see them. This picture isn't shocking - besides what lame person stands there gawping at a CD cover - you want it, you pick it up and buy it! Are there really sad little liberal do-goody twats out there who HONESTLY find this offensive? This society man, we really are pathetic.

Screw Sainsbury's - you had a look at their meat section , vile!!

15. Peter -
Sick!

16. charlie -
Boring, if people are shocked by this they need to switch on the television, open a newspaper or take off the distinctly rose tinted spectacles balanced on the end of their nose...

17. Chief of McAndreis -
i see not mush wrong with it, it is thought provoking as he intended it, again the know-it-alls got it wrong

18. Bernadette -
It is only a picture - get over it. I mean is it any different than the violence that is portrayed on the television or the foul language heard from many of the presenters?

19. roisino -
Ridiculous.

We see naked women all the time on magazines, and some magazines showing beaten women from deomestic violence.

And we cant show a bit of brilliant art?

Sad.

Dont think theres anything wrong with it.
What about the size 0 models that constantly grace the covers of magazines? Surely thats just as bad...

Again - PC going too far.
