Manic Street Preachers Banned

Posted Fri 15 May 2009 11:34AM BST by Dave Rumour in Snap, Crackle and Pop
You probably wouldn't know it looking at their rather tired 21st century image but the Manic Street Preachers used to be a quite terrifying prospect for some, full of provoctive teen rage, playing "Top Of The Pops" in balaclavas, while tragic lost member Richey Edwards famously slashed the words "For Real" into his bloody arm in a bid to impress former music journalist Steve Lamacq. They might be a lot older now but that's not stopped their new album being banned by four of the UK's big retail giants, with one supermarket calling the artwork "inappropriate".

The cover for "Journal For Plague Lovers" (pictured) depicts a girl seemingly with a bloody and battered face and has been painted by acclaimed artist Jenny Saville. The record is considered a follow-up to the Welsh rockers' landmark 1994 album "The Holy Bible", which also featured one of her controversial works. Sainsburys, Tesco, Asda and Morrisons have all refused to stock it with the original image, as Nicola Williamson, music buyer for Sainsbury's explained: "We felt that some customers might consider this particular album cover to be inappropriate if it were prominently displayed on the shelf. "

The Manics have reacted with bafflement at the news, calling their decision "truly bizarre" and pointing to the fact that such shops regularly display products of a similarly graphic nature. "We just thought it was a beautiful painting. We were all in total agreement", explained singer James Dean Bradfield, continuing: "You can have lovely shiny buttocks and guns everywhere in the supermarket on covers of magazines and CDs, but you show a piece of art and people just freak out". "Journal For Plague Lovers" is released on Monday but will only be available in these stores in a special sleeve provided by the publisher.

Are you shocked by the artwork to the new Manic Street Preachers album? Or do you think Sainsburys and co have gone too far in banning it? Have your say here...

rather a painting than some tart with her jugs out. and a gun in each hand.

62. Michael -
whats brown and looks in your window? A nosey [profane]e.

Oh dear!, when I heard it was to de banned I was expecting something really shocking, how anyone finds that either offensive or shocking is beyond me. What exactly is "inappropriate" about it!?

64. Kerry -
I totally agree with James Dean Bradfield, lead singer for MSP. You can walk into any store these days and see very graphic images of guns, war, sexually explicit images and much more. The cover of the new album is a piece of artwork and no-one was hurt or abused in the creation of it. What will all these supermakets do now, remove all their magazines, cd's and other products with highly graphic images......I think not!!!

It's a beautiful painting. So they ban it yet stock the shelves with magazines exploiting women by showing them in bikinis etc?

66. Zoe -
I think it's a beautiful piece of work and though it may be though it may be thought provoking that is not necessarilly a negative thing. I agree with richietees no one was hurt during its process so whats the harm there's plenty of other far more obscene material in the supermarkets to be worried about a wonderful work of art.

67. Yahoo! Music User -
if you dont like it dont buy it .this country has gone mad

68. Darryl -
I think anyone who thinks this is shocking should either:

a) Go back to school to re-learn the meaning of the work shocking

or

b) Step outside of that vacuum of a life they exist within and open their eyes

69. Scrotumring -
Why don't these supermarkets grow up and just sell the damn things in a brown paper cover or is that to simple for the corporate monkeys to grasp?

70. Sarah -
It's an amazing cover. And who buys music from a supermarket anyway?

71. Yahoo! Music User -
It's shocking how censorship is taking over the country. Everyone is afraid to say/do anything for fear of offending someone. This country needs to grow some balls.
I personally don't like the Manic's music, nor do i particularly like the painting, but i wouldn't care if i saw it alongside other CD's. Besides, have you seen some of the RnB compilation covers? They're like a soft-core porno!

72. andrew -
nice art and Its not as shocking are the classic rage against the machine bullet in the head cover which pictured a monk on fire and they still sell that.

73. Calum -
Its not an important piece of news, and since when were these big retail chains cool enough to actually know who The manics are.

74. Nicole -
lmaoooooooo!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I find it so funny how people think that album cover is "unapropiate" Bull [profane], people are just over-reacting.
If you think that is bad you should see some of cradle of filths album covers....

75. Adam -
Pathetic! Yet it's OK to depict women in a demeaning way as on the covers of RnB or Hip Hop covers. Double standards

76. Yahoo! Music User -
what a load of tosh - hasnt anyone heard of art?
art is art and music is art!!
there are much worse things going on in the world.

77. Tony -
I think these outlets should get a life. Perhaps they should ask the people. I have no axe to grind I couldn't name one of the Manics records. I hope it's reverse publicity for the Manics.

78. Andy W -
You can have artwork made of human excrement, animals and parts thereof preserved in resin, put it in a museum and call it all art, a woman paints a picture using paint OH SHOCK HORROR!! tell those bean counters to get a life

79. Dangerous -
Should they ban newspapers then? Or is it only ok if it's real?

80. liam m -
madona can be seen naked we can have jesus upside down etc but this is just a pic of a bloody face. the idiots in charge have to much power. sack them and alow the cover
