Manic Street Preachers Banned

Posted Fri 15 May 2009 11:34AM BST by Dave Rumour in Snap, Crackle and Pop
You probably wouldn't know it looking at their rather tired 21st century image but the Manic Street Preachers used to be a quite terrifying prospect for some, full of provoctive teen rage, playing "Top Of The Pops" in balaclavas, while tragic lost member Richey Edwards famously slashed the words "For Real" into his bloody arm in a bid to impress former music journalist Steve Lamacq. They might be a lot older now but that's not stopped their new album being banned by four of the UK's big retail giants, with one supermarket calling the artwork "inappropriate".

The cover for "Journal For Plague Lovers" (pictured) depicts a girl seemingly with a bloody and battered face and has been painted by acclaimed artist Jenny Saville. The record is considered a follow-up to the Welsh rockers' landmark 1994 album "The Holy Bible", which also featured one of her controversial works. Sainsburys, Tesco, Asda and Morrisons have all refused to stock it with the original image, as Nicola Williamson, music buyer for Sainsbury's explained: "We felt that some customers might consider this particular album cover to be inappropriate if it were prominently displayed on the shelf. "

The Manics have reacted with bafflement at the news, calling their decision "truly bizarre" and pointing to the fact that such shops regularly display products of a similarly graphic nature. "We just thought it was a beautiful painting. We were all in total agreement", explained singer James Dean Bradfield, continuing: "You can have lovely shiny buttocks and guns everywhere in the supermarket on covers of magazines and CDs, but you show a piece of art and people just freak out". "Journal For Plague Lovers" is released on Monday but will only be available in these stores in a special sleeve provided by the publisher.

Are you shocked by the artwork to the new Manic Street Preachers album? Or do you think Sainsburys and co have gone too far in banning it? Have your say here...

Under Hitler it was called "degenerate art".
I thought we were more tolerant and open-minded than this.
Listen and think first before you pass judgement.

it looks more like a boy?

How ridiculous. Its art work. What is more offensive is the boobs, guns, and bums always out on display on RnB albums and magazines. If they are concerned about children in the supermarket they will just see the artwork and probably justt hink its a funny looking face not realising, yet its acceptable for those kids to look at women with everything out on newspapers, magazines, cds etc etc and see headlines on newspapers regarding violence and war. How pathetic, its a piece of artwork. Get over it!

I agree with the sellers banning it from the shops.

Once again it's the mighty supermarket flexing its muscles and dictating what we can and cannot buy. They advertise and tell us how much choice we have and then do this! They deny us the opportunity of buying an excellent album by an intelligent band because they fear the artwork may upset our fragile little minds. Show us some respect for once and let us make up our own minds

''Politically Correct'' culture claims yet another victim. This madness needs to stop NOW

Its all gone a bit Spinal Tap. Maybe the Manic's should just go for black as well. (Or is that now offensive?)

where's the problem, kids see worse things at school. i am from an affluent background and went to a good school and i still saw it. it's not like the painting shows how she got like that. if it was a painting of her taking a beating then yes i could probably understand the decision.

LOL i hope the Manics refuse to sell the album and any future work to them!!! Bring back proper music shops!!! Its what Saturday Mornings were made for!! Supermarkets know absolutely jack about Art and its no more shocking than a daily newspaper showing the aftermath of 9/11 or the attrocities that have befallen Iraqi's or Palestinians or even worse our own soldiers injuries yet they still stock newspapers. I suggest there is another issue that they are not reporting.

some people are unfortunate to have accidents making them look like this... but i dont think a reminder as they do the weekly shop is necessary. the picture needs taming down....
also what about all the little eyes walking past...what are they going to think, they dont understand and they should be protected as much as we can. (these types of images contributed the murder of a little james years ago by children, thinking this was acceptable and the norm!!!)
as adults we strive to show them the right path, and i completly agree with the supemarkets taking a stand,, Thankyou to them for protecting my son from these images! I'm sure as parents you will agree!

amusing comment from James but he's write "shiny buttocks" versus oil painting, supermarkets are just so used to stocking souless, shameless, consumerist, sexist, facist drivel that they're probably not aware of anything out side that spectrum.

Retards.

ART!!!!! some people can be narrow minded but we have a right to express ourselves and this is all what we are doing- art isn't always beautiful, it can be different in many ways. I believe that people can express themselves in many way like art, sign language and in acting.

omg what next!! lets just ban everything even vaguely provocative and live in a 'bland lets pretend nothing bad ever happens world'
