Manic Street Preachers Banned

Posted Fri 15 May 2009 11:34AM BST by Dave Rumour in Snap, Crackle and Pop
You probably wouldn't know it looking at their rather tired 21st century image but the Manic Street Preachers used to be a quite terrifying prospect for some, full of provoctive teen rage, playing "Top Of The Pops" in balaclavas, while tragic lost member Richey Edwards famously slashed the words "For Real" into his bloody arm in a bid to impress former music journalist Steve Lamacq. They might be a lot older now but that's not stopped their new album being banned by four of the UK's big retail giants, with one supermarket calling the artwork "inappropriate".

The cover for "Journal For Plague Lovers" (pictured) depicts a girl seemingly with a bloody and battered face and has been painted by acclaimed artist Jenny Saville. The record is considered a follow-up to the Welsh rockers' landmark 1994 album "The Holy Bible", which also featured one of her controversial works. Sainsburys, Tesco, Asda and Morrisons have all refused to stock it with the original image, as Nicola Williamson, music buyer for Sainsbury's explained: "We felt that some customers might consider this particular album cover to be inappropriate if it were prominently displayed on the shelf. "

The Manics have reacted with bafflement at the news, calling their decision "truly bizarre" and pointing to the fact that such shops regularly display products of a similarly graphic nature. "We just thought it was a beautiful painting. We were all in total agreement", explained singer James Dean Bradfield, continuing: "You can have lovely shiny buttocks and guns everywhere in the supermarket on covers of magazines and CDs, but you show a piece of art and people just freak out". "Journal For Plague Lovers" is released on Monday but will only be available in these stores in a special sleeve provided by the publisher.

Are you shocked by the artwork to the new Manic Street Preachers album? Or do you think Sainsburys and co have gone too far in banning it? Have your say here...

No self respecting Manics fan would buy a CD from a supermarket anyway. Gives the proper record shops (remember them?) a chance to claw back some of their market.
It's so typical of these mass-marketeers, pitching themselves at the lowest common denominator, to crap their consumerist pants a little when faced with something thought-provoking and intellectual - concepts it's clear they're not very familiar with.

I don't think it's a particularly pleasant picture. In a way small children will see it too...I don't think it's a nice thing for them to see. I know there are naked women everywhere, bt they are naked not beaten up. It promotes violence and is very disturbing picture.

You have to be kidding me? Perhaps we should close the 16th chapel because of the violent scenes in depicts!

ive seen worse, there is nothing wrong. this world has gone stupid. makes me mad how perfectic how everything is getting.

I think the art is thought provoking. I agree that they can show tits and ass on Supermarket shelves but a piece of art that makes you ponder its creation is banned. but hey bring on the alchohol discounts and support binge drinking. The heads of the supermarket chains really need to rethink their strategies.

this is ridiculous!
people will see far worse images in real life and on tv

Shocking maybe but isn't that the aim? And whats the difference between displaying this image and displaying 18 rated dvds with similar if not worse images on the cover?

These self righteous stores should therefore be taking off the shelves all books, dvds etc which display bloody images. Will they do this? Not likely. Double standards Morrisons et al? I think so!

Ridiculous!

im glad they banned it

Try something different today.....like boycotting Sainsbury's

I started off by thinking there is something reasonable in the retailers' decisions but I just realized they do display and have for decades movies with covers which could be classified as discusting (every other horror movie for example!) and far from artistic. My final conclusion: WTF!?

152. Yahoo! Music User -
i would never buy it with a cover like that

153. stevie c -
I think the picture is hideous and looks like a case of serious physical abuse, i wouldn't buy it, even if I liked the music.

Corporates and sales people know nothing of art.
They are empty shells and I feel sorry for them.
Banning this just goes to show how short sighted they are. They have not banned it because it was offensive, they have banned it because they dont understand it, and in their eyes, it instantly becomes evil.

155. Laura -
I think its horrible. Art work my arse. Anyone want that up over their breakfast table?

156. Cheese -
As roxyclub77 pointed out the meat section is full of death and systematic abuse. It is just another example of big corporations telling us what we can and cannot purchase. It is a piece of art work, get over it and let people be the judge.

157. jean -
i like it it does not matter what the pics on the front looks like it is the songs people like and the art

158. KRISTINA -
I think the supermarket has acutally done the manics a favour because anything that gets banned usually goes straight to number one in the album charts so well done supermarkets.
people will rush out now and buy it from a shop that sells music not front covers and is in fact in the 21st century not the dark ages

Its Rhiana... lmfao good one...

160. Mark -
Utter rubbish. A photo, I could maybe understand but not a painting.

I reckon teenagers see worse in Hollyoaks every evening!
