Manic Street Preachers Banned

Posted Fri 15 May 2009 11:34AM BST by Dave Rumour in Snap, Crackle and Pop
You probably wouldn't know it looking at their rather tired 21st century image but the Manic Street Preachers used to be a quite terrifying prospect for some, full of provoctive teen rage, playing "Top Of The Pops" in balaclavas, while tragic lost member Richey Edwards famously slashed the words "For Real" into his bloody arm in a bid to impress former music journalist Steve Lamacq. They might be a lot older now but that's not stopped their new album being banned by four of the UK's big retail giants, with one supermarket calling the artwork "inappropriate".

The cover for "Journal For Plague Lovers" (pictured) depicts a girl seemingly with a bloody and battered face and has been painted by acclaimed artist Jenny Saville. The record is considered a follow-up to the Welsh rockers' landmark 1994 album "The Holy Bible", which also featured one of her controversial works. Sainsburys, Tesco, Asda and Morrisons have all refused to stock it with the original image, as Nicola Williamson, music buyer for Sainsbury's explained: "We felt that some customers might consider this particular album cover to be inappropriate if it were prominently displayed on the shelf. "

The Manics have reacted with bafflement at the news, calling their decision "truly bizarre" and pointing to the fact that such shops regularly display products of a similarly graphic nature. "We just thought it was a beautiful painting. We were all in total agreement", explained singer James Dean Bradfield, continuing: "You can have lovely shiny buttocks and guns everywhere in the supermarket on covers of magazines and CDs, but you show a piece of art and people just freak out". "Journal For Plague Lovers" is released on Monday but will only be available in these stores in a special sleeve provided by the publisher.

Are you shocked by the artwork to the new Manic Street Preachers album? Or do you think Sainsburys and co have gone too far in banning it? Have your say here...

...The problem lies at the very foundation that popular music finds itself. That we buy, as a nation, music and cds in a "Supermarket" ! Nothing super about them. No choice like the older record shops used to have. No artistic flair about them. No opinion that matters with them. As long as you get your points, eh? Everything is " Dumbed Down" so that nothing causes a stir in a routine, mundane world. Do you want to live your life through a big shop? I say don't let them stock it; Put your units elsewhere and let your fans support you....They will..
As for the artwork itself, its spot on....

People take life too seriously. Its just a cover! If you don't like it then don't buy it, but surely freedom of speech lets us say and do what we want?

Even if it is shocking - thats the statement! That's the point! Banning it doesn't make it go away. Look at the hype its now getting...

That these profiteering mega chain supermarkets see fit to describe anything as innappropriate is the biggest joke here, but I think they are also underestimating their customers. Most people will recognise how last century this kind of censorship is and as many here have already pointed out, they show no qualms about stocking trashy celeb and grot mags. Six Brit solidiers dead in Afghanistan this week, large swathes of our political reps finally outed as the snout in trough morons they are, peoples homes ,careers and families being lost every day and this artwork is even an issue? Please.

most newspapers show worse, tv programme trailers are sometimes disturbing and dvd cases show scenes of horror. whats the problem with this painting?

doesnt it glorify violence?

Are these supermarkets now working for the ' Thought Police' ??

Not at all.

I'm not even a Jenny Saville fan but really, what's offensive? People get bruises on their faces often. It isn't shocking, it's life! It doesn't even have to be linked to a controversial subject, I mean, you could fall on the street and end up with a bloodied face. Is that offensive? If you accidentally bruise your face would you need to put a bag over your head so as not to offend?!

The music should speak loudly enough in it's own. Why the need for dodgy art? If the music was good enough it would sell in plain packaging.

I know it's art and all that, but to be honest i'd rather it wasn't where my children can see it thanks! And no i don't like guns or scantily clad ladies on my album covers either!

I just thought the girl in the picture had a bad cold.
Supermarkets should stick to doing what they do best - selling goods - and leave the moralising to others. As pointed out by other commentators they are displaying appalling double standards when you look at the other stuff on the magazine shelves. Personally, I don't mind tits and bums on show but if they're going to get in a fizz because they think that picture is shocking they should empty their mag shelves first.

Well i think its a good piece of artwork, its not shocking at all...............get a life!

What complete nonsense by the retailers in question. Go into any of these retailers and you see magazines such as Nuts and Zoo with girls showing their tits & ass on the front covers. They are not banned, but a painting of a woman on the front of a CD seems to cause a lot of problems. There really are some stupid people around us. Nicola Williamson, music buyer for Sainsbury's should be sacked for stuipidity & the buyers for other retailers banning this should be sacked for not doing their job properly & told to get a life & cop themselves on. Anyone else offended should be told likewise.

Wait until they read through the lyrics......... :-)

177. Yahoo! Music User -
so you can go to the supermarkets for soft porn and gangster voilence and marilyn mason but manic street preachers have crossed the line!!
it wont hurt their sales though.

Given the current economic crisis and the numerous wars around the world, not to mention the genocide in Darfur, can we really not find anything better to complain about than a "provocotive" album cover?

179. paul -
All shops should ban it, the manics should pull it and rethink their cover, if you buy it you are supporting child cruelty, do we not see enough of this type of thing? It's sick.

180. VICTORIA -
So magazine covers such as FHM, Nuts and Zoo can show near naked women but a piece of art work is banned? Welcome to Britain 2009.
