Laura Izibor at Islington Bar Academy (27th November, 2008)
Laura Izibor exuded a warm sweetness throughout her set, even during low-key songs like ‘Mmm’. Joking with her audience and drawing them in, encouraging them to offer vocal accompaniement at certain segments, she shows a love for performing her smooth, soulful songs.
The Irish songstress blends an air of quiet confidence with a playful attitude. This gives the impression of a much more seasoned artist, her style being rather reminiscent of Musiq Soulchild and Angie Stone. That she could, to listen to her music, be mistaken for an old hand of the American soul scene, is a testament to the strength of her voice and how secure she is in her music.
Murray James, the young supporting artist, served as an interesting counterpoint to Izibor’s smooth style with his lilting guitar-pop ballads.
Throughout, it seems that all Izibor wants is for her audience to feel the same joy she shows in her performance, offering a gamut of emotions in her comfortable, laid-back style.
