Because rather than celebrate the expulsion of our much-maligned toytown rockers into orbit, McFly are actually the toast of the international solar system community, after NASA chose one of their songs to serenade the stars, following a concerted online campaign from their army of fans.

The band's 2006 hit "Star Girl" was played to astronauts circling Earth this week, after a bombardment of requests on Twitter. Band member Danny Jones called the intergalactic appointment a "dream come true", while space scientist Dr David Whitehouse admitted it could help the organisation "get down with the kids". However, he also warned: "Considering the average age on the space station is 46, I wouldn't have thought many of them have heard of McFly before".
