U2’s Brand New Boots

Posted Mon 19 Jan 2009 9:53PM GMT by Johnny Famethrowa in Touching The Void
Few rock bands have worked politics into their CV quite so richly as U2. Their upbringing within shooting distance of Northern Ireland's Troubles clearly gave Bono and co a launchpad unlike that experienced by, say, Kasabian. But few could have imagined how far the band's much maligned singer would take it. So it is that as we await Barack Obama's historic inauguration tomorrow, the group often cited as the biggest in the world are happily and coincidentally right on-hand to give the thumbs up to the world's new dawn.

A cynical Famethrowa wonders if they actually mapped-out the schedule for new album, "No Line On The Horizon", to include this humungous happening? Perhaps Obama will actually be credited as the inspiration or producer even, like Andy Warhol on The Velvet Underground's seminal debut? Naturally U2 were amongst the acts to perform for the President-elect in Washington on Sunday at the "We Are One" concert, alongside Beyonce and Bruce Springsteen. "On this spot where we're standing, 46 years ago, Dr King had a dream. On Tuesday, that dream comes to pass", Bono told the 400,000 crowd in classic, pompous and bombastic style.

Their two-song set of "Pride" and "City Of Blinding Lights" did not feature the new single "Get On Your Boots". Many people have been bigging up the band's comeback, with producer Daniel Lanois calling the album "one of the great, innovative records from U2", humbly spouting "rock'n'roll has been reinvented one more time." Meanwhile, Bono himself says: "It's not like anything we've ever done before, and we don't think it sounds like anything anyone else has done either." There can be little argument that with "The Joshua Tree" and "Achtung Baby!", U2 broke terrific new ground but can this peculiar single, which doesn't seems to know if it's Arctic Monkeys, Keane, Elvis Costello, Queens Of The Stone Age or, like, U2, really hope to do it all over again?

It's stadium rock,no more no less.Sounds slightly dated though. A bit 80's. There's a bit of Muse about it. Will probably feature on future Top Gear style driving albums

3. WILLIAM -
nonsence

Great song, but U2 always bring their album work to greater heights when they play live, and on hearing this one i cant wait, its probably got the heaviest bass and riffs since Exit ,Wire and Electric Co,well done lads cant wait for the album

BONO FOR PRESIDENT

7. Joe -
its one of the songs that grows on you. but there will be better songs on the album. i dont mind it . cant wait for the concert tho.

Think it'll grow on people. Still think their earlier work was far better though. Not really a definitive U2 sound, more a conglomeration of sounds.

As a long time U2 fan (since i was 13..I'm now 38) all i can say is that I think this is [profane]e. I have lost all respect for St. Bono (who apparently is currently embroiled in a copyright battle with the Almighty over the use of the name "God") and while they're now mainstream i think the music they're making is crap with a few exceptions. Won't be buying the new one..

think it will be a grower by the mighty four looking forward with great expectation for the new album and of course a tour U2 still the best live act ever.

Love u2 but im sorry this sounds like the sort of stuff in the Eighties that you didnt want to listen to! Self contented, obsessed [profane],give it up boys while you have some credibility.

MMMM - It's ok - sounds a bit all over the place, but in not a good Bohemiam Rapsody way. I agree with Jermianh - Dublin to Belfast is a good 100 miles - so not sure a stone could be thrown that far.

St Bono has lost the plot , might please his home crowd (USA) . No longer consider him a fellow Irish man .

18. Ray -
certainly a bit different, but its cool that U2 keep re-inventing themselves. There's definetly some contemporary influences in the song such as Muse etc but its U2 trying a new sound for them & its pretty good.

Muse influence U2???? U2 ARE THE INSPIRATION ! U2 fans dont need or care about people slagging U2 off, Bono is totally misunderstood, he has MADE a DIFFERENCE to a lot of people's lives USING MUSIC as his Platform. So WHAT. The world needs more people like Bono to say it how it is. Theres far too much BULL in Music, bands up their own backsides. U2 never take themselves seriously. If u dont get them, youre too young.

I hate the comments posted about Bono by people who only know what the media decide to publish,Bono has done many, many unrecognised acts of charity.I ,like other u2 fans have been looking forward to the new album, I will not say I like the track just because its my fav band.I appreciate the band trying to accomplish something different, but I was a wee bit disappointed with the new track.Im looking forward to listening to the rest of the album .
