When Kanye Attacks

Posted Thu 19 Mar 2009 5:12PM GMT by Johnny Famethrowa in Touching The Void
How would you feel if every day behind every corner, you found a photographer, lying in wait? This is reality for the modern breed of pop culture figures, who are hounded for their very lives 24/7 by paparazzi, desperate for that money shot, which will set them up for life. In recent history, Britney Spears and Chris Martin are but two stars who have lost it and lashed out. But as you may have read today, Kanye West now heads the bad boy queue following an incident in Los Angeles last year.

The difference here is that the rapper could actually go to prison for more than two years because he seemingly reacted outside the law to the persistent badgering and intrusion that accompanies such celebrity. He has been charged with assault, theft and vandalism following the fracas and his subsequent arrest at LAX in September. The L.A. District Attorney's Office have accused him and road manager Dan Crawley, who faces five years behind bars, of smashing camera equipment belonging to a member of the press and they will both have to answer the charges in court on April 14.

There seems to be fairly irrefutable evidence of the allegation because celebrity website TMZ were handily there to film the drama, which you can see below. This is not the first time Kanye has been in similar trouble. In fact, just two months after this incident he was arrested by British police following a confrontation with a snapper outside the Tup Tup Palace cocktail bar in Newcastle. No charges were filed in this case and it seems clear that West needs to try and control his temper. But can anyone honestly say he deserves to go to prison for this?

The papps desperation to get the biggest money shots has become a frighteningly dark industry. These people employ stalking, aggression, road traffic chaos, trespassing and harrassment as part of their daily routine. There should definately be some more responsibility and ethics involved in this seemingly unregulated, dangerous game... I for one feel much empathy for the really big stars who have to put up with this every single day.

On the other hand... anything that makes Kanye West bugger off for a couple of years can only be a good thing. Hat's off to the papps! Perhaps prison will force feed the ego-maniac some much-needed humble pie!
