Horrors Or Clowns?

Posted Fri 27 Mar 2009 4:35PM GMT by Johnny Famethrowa in Touching The Void
A couple of years ago, a rabble of five truly bizarre looking freaks emerged from deepest, darkest Southend, looking as though that area of the South Coast had been frozen in time. A very stange time too. Trussed-up in black like sons of Satan's own undertakers working part-time as chimney sweeps, they called themselves The Horrors. With names like Faris Rotter, Joshua Third, Tomethy Furse, Spider Webb and Coffin Joe, the only thing that was out of place was the singer's girlfriend Peaches Geldof.

Fast forward beyond an awful lot of hype and a half psychotic half unlistenable debut album called "Strange House", the band made their live return earlier this week with a show at Bethnal Green's Rich Max Cinema. It was here that people got an introduction to new record "Primary Colours", which is being tipped as amongst 2009's greatest leftfield guitar releases. Produced by Portishead's Geoff Barrow, it finds the band working the ideas of Joy Division, Spiritualized, Echo & The Bunnymen, U2, Neu!, The Jesus & Mary Chain, Velvet Underground and Suede into their sound to create a truly dark, devastating and fresh rock concoction.

Speaking to the NME about the new material, Spider Webb said it had been recorded in near total darkness in The Horrors' east London rehearsal room. Meanwhile, Joshua Third said people should get ready for a new dawn, explaining: "We've completely evolved as a band. I guess that's a good way to describe it. We don't really wanna look to the past anymore, it's all about leaving that behind and looking forward now". The album is out in May and is preceded by the monumental single, "Sea Within A Sea", which you can see below and download for free at www.thehorrors.co.uk. Both are an absolute blast.
