Jarvis Cocker Is Back

Posted Mon 18 May 2009 6:25PM BST by Johnny Famethrowa in Touching The Void
In his near 20 years as a ‘pop star', Jarvis Cocker has often been on first name terms with eccentric behaviour. With the release of new album "Further Complications", the former Pulp man and national treasure looks to have been reliably busy on the peculiar front. This morning, he could be found manning the tills at HMV in Oxford Street, London, shifting copies of his second solo work. Then this afternoon, it was reported he is to make his movie debut playing a puppet in a big screen adaptation of the Roald Dahl story "Fantastic Mr Fox", directed by Wes Anderson.

But none of this has got anything on the antics of last week, when he curated a six-day art installation in Paris' Galerie Chappe. The get together was themed around the tough to answer question "What is music?" and included soundtracking a yoga class, a public jam session and one day devoted to children, which saw him leading a bunch of French kids through some spectacularly entertaining choreography. He and his band also recorded the following lo-fi video to new single "Angela" outside the gallery, seemingly at a cost of about €1. Welcome back, Jarvis.

I`ve always had a problem wth Jarvis, he was out before the Mighty Morrisey, yet Steve the Birthday Boy always sang his lyrics with a sharp hint of humour, and with a complete detachment. Mr. Cocker always seemed to be that lad with a chip on his shoulder who could never get a girlfriend and get layed, who hated anyone with any money, and who sang his hate filled songs like the the chap on the outside constantly looking in. His new song, Angela, sounds just like the rubbish he sang with Pulp, albeit with heavier guitars. He`s also another chap who constantly talks and sings about his hometown, when, like Tony Chrisite, Sean Bean, lots of eighties bands, and The Beatles singing about Liverpool, he hasn`t lived there in years..... Another Croissant, Jarvis...?

very astute Daveseye... I 'met' Cocker before he had acheived fame with Pulp in , funnily enough , Paris [ I was working as a soundman with another indie band ] in about 1991.. we were in a bar or cafe around midnight and he was wearing a naff furry type of jacket which contrasted with him being very serious & pretentious and unfriendly...I am a 'northerner' myself and a musician so I put it down to him assuming I was just a road-rat roadie crew type [ of which some are total a**holes ] and to BE ignored , but my impression of him stuck with me which was ' who the f**k does he think he is?' , well he became 'Jarvis' the celebrity , a professional northerner, who doesnt live there anymore, but give me Mark E Smith any day of the week cos I'm sure at midnight in a Parisian bar one would be able to have a beer and a smoke with a true genius who doesnt look down his nose at you..I know that because I had that pleasure , but not in Paris , but in Belfast.. true gent is Mark. Also, it seems Steve Albini is man of choice to revitalise crap {Manics ]Brit 90's bands careers... who's next, Oasis ?
