Oasis Rule Britannia
Few symbols from the Britpop era remain as iconic and as powerful as Noel Gallagher with his Union Jack guitar. Oasis were a true force during that mid-‘90s period, which perhaps explains why they have totally dominated a new poll, designed to find the Best British Songs in rock history. The survey by XFM places the band in each of the top three positions, with "Live Forever" triumphant at Number One.
The Top 10 is as follows:
01 "Live Forever" Oasis
02 "Wonderwall" Oasis
03 "Don't Look Back In Anger" Oasis
04 "I Am The Resurrection" Stone Roses
05 "Love Will Tear Us Apart" Joy Division
06 "Bitter Sweet Symphony" The Verve
07 "My Generation" The Who
08 "I Bet You Look Good On The Dancefloor" Arctic Monkeys
09 "London Calling" The Clash
10 "Champagne Supernova" Oasis
Thousands of listeners voted, most of whom look to have little or no memory of music before Britpop, judging by the total absence of The Beatles or The Rolling Stones. "Oasis undoubtedly has one of the most significant catalogues of all time", explained Paul Jackson, group programming director for XFM. More accurately, the fact that these three tracks and "Champagne Supernova", which rounds out the Top 10, were all taken from their first two albums, "Definitely Maybe" and "What's The Story", just confirms that they burned-out long, long ago, whether this song lives forever or not...
