Almost 25 years ago, Pete Gabriel put together the ground-breaking video to "Sledgehammer", setting a new bar for visual mastery in pop. Exploring the emerging techniques of claymation, pixilation and stop motion, the promo's genius reaches its natural conclusion this week with the release of Coldplay's spectacular "Strawberry Swing" promo. The fourth single to be taken from "Viva La Vida" this is, by some distance, the best video from their latest album.Put together by Shynola, a group of visual artists famous for their work with Beck ("E-Pro"), Blur ("Crazy Beat"), Junior/Senior ("Move Your Feat") and Radiohead ("Pyramid Song"), it sees frontman Chris Martin as an animated superhero attempting to keep his head above water in a fantastical world drawn entirely in chalk. All trussed-up in a suitably daft costume, the singer is captured in all manner of scrapes as he bids to enter heaven and save his damsel in distress. Perhaps Gwyneth might want to take a look at this...
