Pistols Whip Pamela

The results of a bizarre new survey of a TV archive have revealed what is apparently the most requested clip in history. I say bizarre because the Top 10 is a seemingly mind-boggling melange of dubious highlights from 40 years of broadcasting, offering a depressingly limited spectrum of variety. This is probably because Fremantle Media, who commissioned the report, own only Thames TV's catalogue, which has sporadically produced some spectacularly entertaining/awful programming.

Hence the rather random results. Amongst the clips which lead this dismal field are Kenny Everett, Tommy Cooper and Benny Hill in their nudge nudge ‘70s comedy pomp, alongside more recent public desecrations from the pop culture Year Zero that has spawned Paul Potts, Leona Lewis and Will Young. Passing quickly over "Neighbours"' marriage of Scott (Jason Donovan) and Charlene (Kylie Minogue), it is the top two that speak most loudly about the peculiar quality of the survey.

In second place we have Pamela Anderson bouncing down Santa Monica beach (or wherever it was) on "Baywatch", all buxom deliverance and lush goldilocks. A teenage boy's wet dream, basically. But the winner is The Sex Pistols' infamous **** turn on the Bill Grundy show in ‘76, which horrified all boundaries of good taste and immortalised the punk icons forever as the single biggest threat to the little lambs sleeping peacefully upstairs. You've probably seen both, but now seems as good a time as any to revisit the polar opposite champs of Freemantle's work. Pamela's Enya soundtrack is particularly charming.
