A Champagne Supernono

Posted Sun 7 Sep 2008 6:32PM BST by Johnny Famethrowa in Touching The Void
This week, Noel Gallagher took a little time out from slagging off everyone in the world - traditional album promotion mind games - to unveil his Top 10 bands of all pop'n'roll time. Few will have been surprised by the deeply uninspiring list. Here is a man, of course, who likes to keep things simple, traditional. Nearly 15 years after Oasis first emerged, seemingly from a cave in the Pennines, they're still ending gigs with a cover of The Beatles' "I Am The Walrus". So, as inevitable as death, The Fab Four head the poll, ahead of The Rolling Stones and The Who.

"This means the Top 10 bands of all time. No solo artists allowed. No female artists allowed. No collectives allowed (Public Enemy etc.)", Noel preached to fans in an online posting. This sounds more like the sort of prehistoric, painfully arbitrary, borderline prejudice selection process he and brother Liam might have used to scrawl a list on the back of a beer matt as kids in Burnage Working Men's Club, while their dad was getting pulled-off in the loo by the floozy from across the road. Surely it can't just be Famethrowa that is somewhat aghast at the omissions, from Noel and anyone else's own point of view?

How could he neglect The Stone Roses, The Smiths and - wait ‘til Weller hears about this! - The Jam? That's saying nothing for no Velvet Underground or Beach Boys, both of whom have, arguably, had more impact in all respects than nearly every group on his list. Interestingly, there's not one act in Noel's "DEFINITIVE" Top 10 that aren't British, although, somehow, he has made room for The La's (one ace album, that's it), Pink Floyd (who Blender this week voted amongst the most overrated acts in music history) and The Bee Gees (?!). Is he pulling our leg? Well, for the record, here's the full list, with Famethrowa's posted directly below. Let's hope he reads it...
