I Love Weezer
Famethrowa is clearly a little late to the party and this isn't something you would have caught me saying last night but I love Weezer. This realisation has come at the hands of their irrepressible new single, "Pork And Beans", which frontman Rivers Cuomo freely admits was written under record company pressure for more "catchy" output. I've never been a fan of their consciously odd-ball rock which the super-smart Cuomo, sporting a soft porn moustache in this new video, clearly revels in. But it's exactly for these reasons that "Pork And Beans" is such a hit.
As you may know, the clip brings together some of the most celebrated YouTube clips of recent years and runs the film around new footage of the ‘stars'. Forever a defender and celebrator of the loser, outsider or weirdo, this is definitive Weezer and thoroughly entertaining stuff, which explains why its had four million views already. Amongst the 24 original virals used and assembled for the promo are the ‘Star Wars Kid', a man putting on 155 t-shirts, Britney obsessive Chris Crocker and the infamous ‘Chocolate Rain' clip, which has so far been viewed by 23 million people alone.
Speaking about the "Pork And Beans" video, the band's Scott Shriner said it was "like a YouTube convention", continuing: "It was great to see all these people made famous on the net for making mistakes have their day in court." Weezer have got their new, self-titled, album out later this month and after working with Rick Rubin now have an eye on their next producer - Timbaland - who gets an obvious nod in "Pork And Beans". Collaborations clearly bring the best out of them. After all, Spike Jonze was at the helm for this, perhaps their finest moment:
